Pitney Meadows Community Farm Cheers on Saratoga High School Boys Running Team, 2023 NYSPHAA State Champions!
In the heart of Saratoga Springs, the Pitney Meadows Community Farm has not only cultivated crops but also a sense of community and achievement for the Saratoga High School Boys Running Team. Coach Shane Zanetti has been an integral part of this journey, guiding the team to success on and off the track since 2011 as well as serving on the board of Pitney Meadows.
The unique partnership between the Saratoga High School Boys Running Team and Pitney Meadows Community Farm began when Peter Goutos, former Pitney board member and friend of the team, envisioned the farm as a community space with running trails. Even before the trails were established, the farm became a training ground, with Bill Pitney mowing paths for the team. It marked the beginning of a relationship that would flourish over the years.
For the team, the farm isn't just a training ground; it's a sanctuary. The picturesque trails not only keep the runners off busy roads but also provide a softer surface, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the athletes. Beyond physical benefits, the farm has become a place of pride and ownership for the team, solidifying its status as a second home.
Giving Back Through Volunteer Work
The commitment to community extends beyond running for these athletes. As part of their team mission, they engage in volunteer work at the farm. From parking cars at events to picking vegetables and even contributing to farm infrastructure, the team actively participates in building a sense of selflessness and service, embodying values that extend beyond the track.
When asked how the team members feel about Pitney Meadows, Coach Zanetti says, "They just love it. The farm is more than just a training ground; it's a place where we can build relationships, eat lunch, and appreciate the beauty of Saratoga. When alumni return, they make it a point to bring friends to the farm, showcasing the lasting impact it has had on our lives.”
