2019 Expansion of the Community Gardens
The Community Garden is now home to over 100 garden beds, building upon Pitney Meadow's commitment to provide community education, gathering opportunities, and a place to 'grow' community! With the addition of 40 new beds this year, the community garden has increasingly become an open and diverse space, one where elders are working alongside young families, and seasoned gardeners are reaching out to those who are planting seeds for the very first time.
It all began on Rich Torkelson’s workbench as he sawed heavy locust lumber into usable garden bed material. He was joined by dozens of volunteers over the next three months as the project shifted to the high tunnel, joining planks into garden beds, and later, moving them onto the garden site for installation and landscaping.
Thank you to the many dedicated volunteers who donated hundreds of hours to make this expansion possible. Special thanks to the US Navy for sending service members to lend a hand, and to Bill Pitney, for his invaluable gift of time and many talents!
